At least South Dakota governor Kristi Noem didn’t shoot a kitten on live television

Kristi Noem has been governor of South Dakota since 2019. Recently she campaigned to become the Republican candidate for vice president. In early May she released an autobiography titled No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward. Pre-release copies were sent to the press.

That book contained stories which she thought would show how decisive she could be. But Kristi should have omitted telling them, since they led to a public relations disaster with a firestorm of criticism. On April 26, 2024 there was an article by Martin Pengelly at The Guardian titled Trump VP contender Kristi Noem writes of killing dog – and goat - in new book. There also was another article by Diana Glebova in the New York Post on April 29, 2024 titled Kristi Noem has ‘no shot’ as Trump’s VP pick after puppy-killing controversy: sources. And a YouTube video from the Chris Hayes MSNBC show was titled ‘Dumpster fire:’ Kristi Noem cuts book tour short after disastrous week. He played from where the audiobook both told about shooting the puppy, and how some witnesses reacted.

What could have been even worse? She might have shot a kitten on live television.

Incredibly the puppy story had come up before, and it was left out of her earlier 2022 book titled Not My First Rodeo: Lessons from the Heartland. Yet another article by Amanda Yen at The Daily Beast on May 6, 2024 was titled Kristi Noem’s Publisher Previously Nixed Her Puppy-Killing Story: Report.

But she also had accused tribes of aiding drug cartels. A recent article by Olivia Land in the New York Post on May 23, 2024 was titled Gov. Kristi Noem now banned from all South Dakota tribal lands.
