Back on August 7, 2019 there was a post by Bob Neugebauer at the Gem State Patriot News blog titled The Dismantling of Micron - a Boise Icon which began by ‘viewing with alarm’ as follows (my italics):
“This is very disturbing to myself and the staff of the Gem State Patriot and it should be even more troubling to the people who live in the Treasure Valley and the elected officials who govern our state. We are in receipt of a letter written to one of our state representatives by a person who has been an employee of Micron for over a decade and it tells a story of how the new CEO of Micron Sanjay Mehrotra been slowly dismantling this homegrown giant and his plans to move most of the manufacturing to foreign sources along with moving its headquarters to Milpitas California. The question is why hasn’t anyone from the city of Boise, the state or the office of the President asked Mr. Mehrotra when or why these moves will take place? Even our friends at the liberal media outlets have been silent on this matter as if there was nothing going on. Have they all been asleep at the printing press or their microphones? Friends at the liberal media outlets have been silent on this matter as if there was nothing going on. Have they all been asleep at the printing press or their microphones?”
Did that dismantling come to pass? Of course not! Instead there were new incentives to manufacture here in the US. There is an article by Abby Davis at KTVB7 on October 5, 2023 titled Construction of Micron’s memory chip manufacturing facility officially begins and subtitled The project will cost about $15 billion, making it the largest private investment in Idaho history.
And another article by Angela Palmero in the Idaho Statesman on October 6, 2023 is titled For ‘high-paying jobs’ at Boise fab, Micron will work to entice veterans, women, Latinos. The article notes this will be the first wafer fab fab built in America in over 20 years.
