From September 22 through 29 my wife Elaine and I went on an ocean cruise from Seattle to Alaska on the Royal Caribbean ship Ovation of the Seas. We arrived in Sitka on September 26 at 8:00 AM and departed at 5:00 PM. The ship docked about six miles from downtown. I rode a shuttle bus there on a very gray day that threatened rain.
Saint Michael’s Cathedral is one of the iconic buildings in Sitka. It was completed back in 1848, burned in 1966, and then was rebuilt. As shown above, one end has an octagonal dome and the other has a rectangular bell tower with a clock.
The Pioneer Home is another well-known building in Sitka, shown above behind a totem pole. Look at how dark my original image was.
In front of it there is a 13-1/2 foot bronze statue of a pioneer, but there is uncertainty about who was the model.
There also is the Sitka National Historical Park (also known as Fort Sitka), with a collection of totem poles. I decided to skip the potentially wet long walk there and back from downtown. You can watch a five-minute YouTube video of fourteen Things to Do in Sitka.
