From September 22 through 29 my wife Elaine and I went on an ocean cruise from Seattle to Alaska on the Royal Caribbean ship Ovation of the Seas. On September 25 at 7:00 AM we arrived in Skagway. We had to take a shuttle bus ride for a few hundred yards from the ship around where a rock slide had blocked the sidewalk. Then we walked a quarter mile to downtown and looked around.
We walked back to the shuttle bus stop to board the White Pass & Yukon Railway for their Summit Excursion. That 20.5 mile ride had stunning scenery (forests, mountains, canyons) with an altitude gain of 2888 feet. It was one of the highlights of our cruise. There is an 18-minute time-lapse video of this entire route.
At one point we were parallel to the very narrow goldrush Trail of 98.
We departed Skagway heading for Sitka at 5:30 PM.
